April 2011 Message

Just because the season has ended doesn’t mean that we aren’t thinking of the next trip. The Fredericksburg Ski Club will participate in the 2012 BRSC Winter Carnival at Snowmass/Aspen in February. Rae Ehlen has already volunteered to lead that trip.

The Board of Directors are also planning at least one additional club trip next winter. Watch the FSC website and Cheer Lift newsletter for more information.

A big thanks goes out to the Board, the trip leaders and others who volunteered their time and expertise this year to make this a great year for the club. Without their hard work, the trips, the social events and the club itself would not have happened.

That said, being on the Board of Directors is really pretty easy. The most difficult part of the job is to helping to choose the coming year’s destinations and plan social events. You don’t even need to live in the Fredericksburg area--now that we are making some decisions by email, any club member is eligible to be on the Board. At the membership meeting on April 20, we will hold elections. If you would like to nominate anyone--including yourself—contact any Board member by April 18.

Please plan to attend the membership meeting at the Fredericksburg Pub on April 20, 6:30 PM. This will be the last meeting until September. We will talk about Summer events, including picnic and pool party. See you there!

March 2011 Message

Jackson Hole, here we come! When you read this, the Club will be enjoying the terrific ski conditions in the beautiful Tetons of Wyoming. Trip leader Bob Schwab will shepherd 18 skiers to the mountains on Sunday, February 27th.  For one of us, it will also be a trip down Memory Lane, as that was where Lois Rose learned to ski.

I understand the BRSC Western Carnival trip to Park City was a great success. Trippers said it was the best snow they have seen in recent years. Apparently, it snowed only at night, and days were cold but clear and sunny - in my book, the best conditions possible. Many thanks to leader Rae Ehlen for running that trip as smoothly as all his other trips.

Do you want to help decide on next year's destinations? Is there a place you have always wanted to go, but had no one to go with? Run for FSC office and you get to make those decisions. Get your ideas together - the Board is always open to suggestions from new members. Serving on the Board is easy - meet just 7-8 times a year for about 90 minutes each, make club decisions and enjoy a beverage. Pretty simple, and a great addition to your resume.

The February membership meeting was held in a new venue - the Fredericksburg Pub. The March 16th membership meeting will be held there as well - in a quiet room this time. I hope to see you there. It was a good meeting with really good food, great company, Steve Konopa's photos from Park City and a waiter who is also a skier. What's not to like? So get a jump on St. Patrick's day with us on the 16th.

That's all for now. If you are headed to Jackson Hole or another mountain in March, be careful and have a great time. See you at the March 16th meeting.

February 2011 Message

As you read this, FCS friends are enjoying a great week of skiing at Park City. I hope they have a wonderful time and come back with great pictures and even better stories to tell. For those going to Jackson Hole later this month, it is only a few more weeks. Hang in there.

Change is good! In February, we will hold the membership meeting in a new venue, the Fredericksburg Pub. (See their website at http://thebritishpubs.com/.) This is behind Spotsylvania Towne Center, at 1 Towne Center Blvd, near Macy's. It is rumored that their beer selection is superb, and the fish and chips is said to be outstanding. The meeting is Wednesday, February 16th at 6:30 PM.

That's all for now. Stay warm, and continue to think snow!

January 2011 Message

As I write this, I'm looking out the kitchen window at a clear driveway. This time last year, snow was piled almost six feet high in the yard (thanks to the snow plows), with constant threat that more would fall. So far, 2011 is a lot more dry, but that apparently is not the case in Utah and Wyoming. I'm sure we are all looking forward to both Jackson Hole and Park City with today's bases at 79" and 80" respectively. Rae Ehlen has 15 skiers headed to Park City in early February, and 18 are going to Jackson Hole. Thank you, Rae and Bob Schwab for leading these trips.

It may be too late to sign up for one of our trips, but 2012 is another year. Where would you like to go? Let one of the Board of Directors know your preferences.

The Christmas party on December 4th, was a huge success. We had a great turnout, with lots of old and new faces. The meal was wonderful and everyone had a chance to visit with old friends. There was even a personalized souvenir ornament for everyone. Thanks to Marguerite Schwab for once again setting up the festivities.

Our current membership comes to 45. Are you a member? If not, come on. What are you waiting for? Don't get left out in the cold. Join and see what everyone is talking about.

Don't miss the next membership meeting at Carlos O'Kelly's on January 19th, 6:30 PM. See you there!

November/December 2010 Message

Can you believe it? The season is almost here—time to start tuning your skis.

I understand from Rae Ehlen that the Park City is almost full, with 16 skiers. There are still a few spots open until November 4th. I hope you didn’t miss it. Park City is such a great place to ski and the nightlife and shopping in town are some of the best. Bob Schwab says the Jackson Hole trip is filling up fast. He has 13 registered skiers so far, with 4 more expected any day. Even if you missed out on Park City, don’t miss Jackson Hole. If you prefer something other than the two FSC trips, you are always eligible to sign up for any BRSC sanctioned trip. For a list, check the list in the newsletter or click on the BRSC link on the FSC Trips page.

Don’t forget to renew your membership. It is required to go on one of the club trips, it costs very little, and carries a lot of benefits. Fredericksburg has one of the lowest dues rates in the Blue Ridge Ski Council. Even if you just want to go on one of the BRSC sanctioned trips your Fredericksburg membership will let you do that. And, members receive a $5 discount on the Christmas party. It’s a great deal. See the renewal application at the back of the newsletter or download it from our web site.

Speaking of Christmas parties… This year, ours will be at Robinson’s Tavern and Grill on Saturday, Dec. 4. Just follow Rte. 3 west to Rte. 20. Make a left and watch for Robinson’s on the right. We had a fabulous meal there last year and I am looking forward to another great event. Marguerite Schwab will be sending out announcements soon; you may have already gotten yours. I hear she is planning for a little holiday snowfall to get us in the mood—just like last year.

Ladies, care to take a few warm-up runs in Park City? Sharon Pedersen, one of our Florida members, invites any woman who would like to join her for a week of skiing to share the 2 bedroom timeshare she has reserved at the ski in/ski out Marriott Mountain Side on December 4th-10th. Sharon has already paid for the room; you just need to purchase your airfare. Contact her at
pedshaz@gmail.com.

And that’s all for now. The November membership meeting will be at Carlos O’Kelly’s on Wednesday, November 17th. Don’t miss it.

October 2010 Message

Many thanks to Lois Rose for hosting the club picnic at her farm in September. It was a beautiful day in a peaceful setting. And thanks to Chef Bob Schwab, who grilled up the burgers and hot dogs. It was the first membership meeting of the year, and a good kick-off for the season.

Bob Schwab and Rae Ehlen have worked hard this summer to set up two great trips this winter. Rae has several spots left for Park City, but time is running out to make reservations. If you want to go, you must let him know by October 31st. He needs to release any open seats by that date. Bob's trip to Jackson Hole is filling up fast as well. Don*t delay in contacting Rae or Bob, or you just might be the one left behind.

In the near term, Marguerite Schwab is leading another club visit to the Riverside Dinner Theater, to see the popular play CHICAGO. The date for this event is November 19th. Tickets must be purchased in advance, so contact Riverside right away if you're interested.

Circle Saturday, December 4th, on your calendar. You don't want to miss the FSC Christmas party. It will be held that evening at the same location we enjoyed last year--Robinson's Tavern and Grill on Rt. 20. Everyone had a good time, and the food was fabulous. Marguerite Schwab is hard at work on announcements, to be mailed in late October. Let her know if you do not receive yours. If you are a member in good standing, the club will take $5.00 off your dinner bill. (In other words you have to have your dues up to date.)

Don't forget that it's time to renew your membership, so just fill out the application form on page 5 and mail it in with a check for the dues! That's all for now. I hope to see you at Carlos O'Kelly's for the October 20th membership meeting.

September 2010 Message

Even though many of us have kept busy this summer with work, traveling, volunteering, and other activities, it will be nice to see the Fall, the holidays and then ski trips.  Have you decided which trip or trips; local or long distance, you want to take this year?  Fredericksburg Ski Club will have two trips.  One is the BRSC Winter Carnival return to Park City.  This is always a great mountain, with plenty of terrain for all ability levels.  I have been there twice in the last ten years and thoroughly enjoyed both trips.  We will have another trip, to challenging Jackson Hole, WY.  Details are still being worked out, but this will be a six day trip and we are looking at partnering with another club to get an improved package rate.

Closer to home is the first membership meeting of the year:  a picnic at Lois Rose's farm, on Sunday, September 12th.  See details elsewhere in the Cheer Lift.  Lois hosted us last year for a picture perfect day, and we have ordered up the same for this year.  I hope you will come to help kick off the year.  Meetings for October and later months will be held on the traditional third Wednesday of the month at the traditional venue:  Carlos O'Kelly's.

Since the last newsletter, two other club social events have been held.  The pool party hosted by Libby Jacoby earlier this month was a "splashing" success.  Everyone appreciated Chef Bob (Schwab's) efforts at the grill.  And it was just a great, relaxing day.  Those who went to the Riverside Dinner Theater to see "Into the Woods" enjoyed the meal and play.  I understand the sets and staging were very imaginative.

Aside from "think snow", that's all for now.  Don't forget the kick-off picnic at Lois Rose's on September 12th.

July/August 2010 Message

Talk about sizzling!  Could this summer get any hotter?  Well, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and it is cold, sparkly and white.  Are you looking as hard as I at the end of that tunnel?

While we wait for white, some fun summer activities are calling us.  Check the FSC Upcoming Events page or call Marguerite Schwab for more information on all events.  Libby Jacoby has graciously volunteered to host a pool party on Saturday, July 10th.  The club will provide burgers; come with your swimsuit, your favorite beverages and a side dish.

Have your reserved a seat at the club's night out at Riverside Dinner Theater on Friday, August 27th?  The play is "Into the Woods" - a Stephen Sondheim musical which I am told is very entertaining.

We are moving ahead with plans for the club to participate in the BRSC Western Carnival in Park City, Utah, February 5th-12th, 2011.  Details have not yet been settled, but mark your calendar now.  You don't want to miss this trip.  A second western trip is still in the works; we hope to have details to you soon.

Hope to see you at the pool party!  In the meantime, renew your membership and think snow!

May/June 2010 Message

Elections were held for the 2010-2011 Board of Directors at the April membership meeting—the last one until September. Your club’s new Board is published in this newsletter and posted to the club Website. On behalf of the Board, I’ll say "Thank you" for contributing to a great past year, even as we look forward to the new one.

The membership year will begin soon. Please think about renewing or encouraging friends to join. For those who like to plan ahead, FCS will participate in the BRSC Western Carnival trip to Park City next year. This is one of my favorite mountains, and the town is great as well. There is something for everyone—skiers and non-skiers alike. An additional FSC trip is also planned—destination to be decided. But you know it will be great.

Even though we will not have formal meetings in the summer, Marguerite Schwab, our active Social Chair, has set up a round of events to keep us in touch with each other during the months ahead. Gloria Benedetto will lead a tour of the Workhouse Arts Center on June 19. I hear that "tourists" will receive a 10% discount in the gift shop. Never too early to shop for Christmas!

In July, dig out your swimsuit for a cool dip at the 2nd annual pool party at Libby Jacoby’s home. Information about these events and others (including a night out at Riverside Dinner Theater and a picnic in September) is elsewhere in the newsletter and on the web site.

And, please save December 4th for the Christmas party. We had a great time and excellent dinner last year; I hope you can join us this year.

In the meantime, keep your ski tips up and "think snow" this summer.
